Up for sale, a 1960′s Lifco “The Imperial” model 630 tube amplifier head in excellent condition and in good working order. A rare amp that was designed and manufactured in Montreal, Quebec, this Canadian tube amp utilizes a matched pair of vintage Sylvania 6BQ5 (EL84) power tubes, delivering the sweet overdrive characteristics for which these tubes are known. There’s a sizzle and midrange chewiness to the sound, with plenty of crunch and a decent clean signal at lower volumes or with your guitar’s volume knob rolled back. Dimed out, the low end holds together well, and this head is a real firebreather, taking gain pedals well if you want to really push the sound beyond the natural power tube overdrive of the amp. The point-to-point circuit has been thoroughly serviced with new tone caps and a recap of the main filters as well. While the power transformer appears original, the output transformer is more questionable in terms of whether it’s stock to the amp (with so few examples in existence it’s difficult to be conclusive). Regardless, the output transformer has plenty of heft to easily handle the roughly 15 watt output of the amp, and in addition to the pair of 6BQ5 power tubes, the amp has four 6AV6 preamp tubes and a 5Y3 rectifier. The head retains its original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle diamond grillcloth, as well as stock, corners, handle caps, “Imperial” logo, and chicken head knobs. There’s modest wear on the faceplate and a couple small scuffs, but overall this rare amp has been well cared for over the decades both in terms of circuit roadworthiness and cosmetic condition. We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to assure that your amp arrives safely.
