For testing purposes, I temporarily populated this very original Lafayette LA-240 integrated amplifier with a set of tubes and powered it up slowly with a Variac, monitoring voltage interactively. Power came up normally, but by the time there was audio output there was significant audio hum through the speakers. Because of that, I did not attempt to pass an audio signal through it. So, for purposes of this sale, consider the amplifier non-operational. It will need the attention of a competent tube audio repair technician in order to be usable again. Or if you choose, it could be a good source of parts for your LA-240. The faceplate and cabinet have some blemishes, but are generally attractive. Silver metal knobs are in good condition, but will need some cleaning. Chassis is in good over-all condition, with a few, relatively small rust patches on the rear face, and the adjoining rear side area. One output transformer’s black-painted case has a bit of low rust showing in the same area, adjoining the chassis. The bottom panel has a bit of surface rust. Original, seldom-seen, RCA grounding plugs are still in place. There’s very heavy iron in the power transformer. Opinons vary regarding who manufactured the output transformers. But the consensus seems to be that they are very good, and produce quality output. Appearance-wise, this is a classic mid-century design. Shiny gold and white painted metal, with silver knobs, and angled, molded plastic legs in a reddish brown. Like most Lafayette-imported Japanese audio components of this era, the LA-240 is a nice looking, period-styling exercise. It’s made to sit on a tabletop, as a functional showpiece. It’s just too’60s-cool looking to hide on a shelf. I see no signs of any repair or replacement work ever having been done to this unit. But note, for example, that in the under-chassis pictures a number of resistors appear to have become heat darkened. These Japanese-built Lafayette amplifiers are relatively scarce. They are well-respected, and have developed a following over the years. And for good reason. They’re high quality amplifiers that reward the listener with outstanding sound, yet don’t cost an arm and a leg. It’s well worth bringing one back to full song.
