Up for sale, a 1962 Ampeg B-15N “Flip-Top” Portaflex tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This one-owner B-15N is a very early example, sporting stock “Navy Random Flair” tolex that preceded the infinitely more common blue checkerboard pattern. As the amp that defined the Motown bass sound and a must-have for studios worldwide, the B-15N is the undisputed king of vintage bass tone, with a thick, thumpy sound that is round, detailed, and versatile, bringing out the best in your instrument’s natural tonal characteristics. The two channels each have a unique voice, with Channel One being a bit more mellow and smooth, while Channel Two has a touch more grit and bite, also making it an excellent choice for guitar (diming this channel out delivers a particularly nice overdriven roar with a humbucker or P-90 equipped instrument). Serviced and well maintained, this B-15N is ready for stage and studio use. The circuit has been well maintained in the amp’s lifetime, with a few new caps in the power supply and fresh power tubes. The stock transformers are present and the original CentraLab pots date to the first weeks of 1962. The schematic on the underside of the chassis is dated to March of 1961. The original multi-pin connection between the head and cab has been replaced with a conventional 1/4 and there is also a disconnected switch and additional jack on the side of the cab for running an extension speaker. The speaker is a’60s Jensen C-15N with a clean teal frame. This ceramic driver sound clear and powerful, keeping low frequencies rich and focused. Cosmetically, the most notable feature is the early Navy Random Flair tolex, which is intact on the entire cabinet save for the top of the cab where the chassis mounts. Citing wear to the original piece, a new Fliptop “lid” was made by the original owner and tolexed in blue checkerboard. The stock latches are still mounted and all of the original hardware is present including the light up lucite “Ampeg” logo and all of the original knobs. There are a couple scuffs through the tolex on the edges of the enclosure, and there’s cleanly applied gaffe tape along the lower edges of the cab (due to the relative fragility of the original tolex we’ve chosen to leave the gaffe in place at present). The majority of the original white silkscreened text is present on the faceplate and the chassis still has plenty of shine left in the chrome.
